What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a landmark Australian government initiative designed to provide people with disability greater choice, control, and independence in the supports they receive. Unlike traditional welfare programs, the NDIS allocates funding directly to eligible individuals, allowing them to tailor their support to their unique goals and lifestyle preferences.
Introduced to transform disability support, the NDIS empowers participants to make decisions about the type, frequency, and provider of services they access. Whether you need assistance with daily tasks, community participation, specialised therapies, or clinical nursing care, the scheme enables you to build a support network that is as individual as you are. The aim is to promote inclusion, improve quality of life, and enable participants to fully engage in society. Through the NDIS, participants are no longer passive recipients of care but active decision-makers with control over their support arrangements.
Who is eligible?
To qualify, a person must meet specific age, residency, and disability-related requirements set by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). These criteria help ensure that the NDIS delivers meaningful and appropriate assistance to those living with a permanent and significant disability. Children, adults, and young people transitioning from school can all be eligible. The NDIS recognizes the varied needs of its participants and adapts its supports accordingly. If you’re unsure about your eligibility, the NDIS provides a clear checklist and offers support through Local Area Coordinators to help you understand your options.
